My first impulse to make a map shaped vessel was motivated by a desire to emphasize rivers as sources of vital drinking water and by the vessel shape of the Korean peninsula. During my residency in Korea, I lugged bottled spring water home past a stream filled with celadon-grey water and pilings for an overhead highway. A concern for clean water in South Korea coincided with devastating drought in North Korea. Cranes, clouds, and fish, traditional motifs in Korean ceramics, supplicate for rain and unity across the horizon line of the 38th parallel.
